Software Development

Senior / Principal SQA Automation Engineer

POSITION SUMMARY:

This senior hire will be a key contributor to architecting, implementing, extending and maintaining automated test scenarios and suites for VFA’s Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) based product offerings, which are accessed by both traditional web browsers and mobile devices. The Senior SQA Automation Engineer will work within a small team of test automation-dedicated engineers, but must also proactively collaborate with manual test-focused SQA engineers, software development peers and the department director to best ensure that delivered automation solutions are aligned with product release objectives.

Automation efforts will primarily encompass functional test cases, and may later encompass API testing and load/scalability test scenarios. The Senior SQA Automation Engineer will also be responsible for documenting the automation, and training other SQA test engineers firstly to execute the tests and interpret the results, and secondarily to help groom the collective test automation skill set within the team.

As we are a small team with a lot on our plates, the ideal candidate must also demonstrate flexibility via a willingness to occasionally participate in non-automated testing efforts as project priorities warrant.

Depending on the candidate’s experience, this may become a Principal level position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Collaborate with SQA team leadership, peer SQA engineers, and developers to identify, prioritize, and execute against functional test automation requirements for our multi-tiered, web-based software applications. Though knowledge of, and experience implementing test automation frameworks is quite valuable, this hire must be able to incrementally deliver well-coded scripts early, and in a steady manner.

• Team with software developers early in the product development cycle to influence unit test design, and identify areas for implementing test hooks, to facilitate test automation efforts.

• Proactive and ongoing research of commercial and open source tools and utilities to ensure that test automation methods remain current and efficient.

• Provide documentation on all test automation solutions, so that scripts can be mapped to the overall test plan, and so that less automation-knowledgeable staff becomes adept at executing and interpreting them.

• Minimal participation in non-automated QA testing activities, which is expected to decrease even more over time.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Deep experience delivering comprehensive and maintainable automated testing solutions in “time-to-market” driven project environments, inclusive of experience automating testing for multi-tiered web-based applications. Experience automating tests across multiple web browsers and/or mobile web applications is a plus.

• 6+ years of overall software quality assurance and/or product development experience, with exposure to the full product development cycle – from requirements through post-release. Experience or exposure to Agile is a plus.

• Advanced-level knowledge of one or more functional test automation tools, including strong programming ability within the tool’s native language, and demonstrable application of data-driven test programming techniques. Preference will be given to candidates with strong QuickTest Professional experience.

• Comfortable building and performing database queries. Oracle experience is a plus.

• Excellent troubleshooting ability.

• Strong collaboration, organization and communication skills. Proactively provides automation document deliverables.

• Routinely demonstrates flexibility, and is a capable multi-tasker and total team player. Willing to pitch in and contribute to manual test efforts when needed.

• Experience mentoring and training more junior engineers.

• Prior experience providing API-level test automation is a plus.

• BS in Computer Science or equivalent.
